Boston College Florida State Preview | Q&A with Chant Rant

Rich from Chant Rant has been kind enough to do a little Q&A with us. Check out my answers on his blog.

1) Florida State has had plenty of distractions this week, do you think they can overcome this and focus on the game?
Florida State's receiving corps is decimated due to suspensions just announced (3pm EST) for Saturday's game with B.C. A very reliable source in Tallahassee reports suspension of Bert Reed, Corey Surrency, Taiwan Easterling, Cameron Wade, Rod Owens and Richard Goodman.

Goodman wasn't a factor because he's been out all year recovering from an '07 injury. The others are speed guys with great hands who've been big contributors. The WRs to watch for now are playmaker Preston Parker, Gregg Carr (the 6'-6" jump ball artist that B.C. fans should know from the past three years) and newcomer Louis Givens, a 5'8" speedster who literally burst on the scene last, zipping through Clemson's defense for a near TD. Owens has only 11 catches for 115 yards this year.

2) How has Florida State rushing attack been so successful this year?
Biggest share of the credit goes to OL Coach Rick Trickett and his young linemen. He's molded a group of true freshmen, redshirt frosh and a few sophs into a pretty good unit -- far better than anything fans expected before the season. Trickett is an ex-Marine and handles his guys like a drill instructor. He also demands a lean bunch of guys who may be smaller than the DL they oppose (especially B.C.'s) but are quicker (the same philosophy used by the Denver Broncos). And Trickett's intense conditioning, and insistence on low body fat count, keeps them playing intensely til the final buzzer.

Credit also goes to senior RB Antone Smith, finally showing the potential of the 5-star recruit that he was coming out of high school. Also the pleasant surprise at RB is Jermaine Thomas, a true freshmen who's burned ACC defenses with his quickness and great vision.

3) Defensive End Everette Brown has put up some monster numbers this year. Is it possible for BC to slow him down? If so, How?
You might want to double-team Brown. When he's motivated, he's very hard to stop. Though he has had some so-so games this season when he wasn't as much of a factor for opposing defenses. I'm guessing he understands that a great showing this season will pave the way to leaving a year early for the NFL draft. Two more defensive ends to watch for, though: Senior Neefy Moffet, who snared a wounded-duck throw last week from Clemson's QB and scooted to a score, and Markus White, last year's sack leader in the JC ranks.

4) Much is being made of this "blackout" down in Tallahassee. What do you think of it, is it a gimmick or a cool new tradition?
While many FSU fans, like me, see it as a gimmick, which it is, the stands will be black Saturday night. Chalk it up to fan peer pressure and seeing other schools having fun with color-themed nights (like Penn State's White Out).
