Chris Crane Injury | Offensive Adjustments

Now that starter Chris Crane is done for the year with a broken collarbone it is red shirt freshman Dominique Davis' chance to shine. It was pretty obvious he was overwhelmed for the majority of the game against Wake Forest, but he really came alive in the final 4 minutes leading the Eagles to a 70 yard drive for the winning score. Offensive Coordinator Steve Logan has a full week of preparation and it will be interesting to see how he adjusts the offense to suit Davis.

  • I expect him to simplify the reads to Davis even more. Logan had to do this for Crane early on and he will likely have to again for Davis. Dominique plays better when making short, quick reads. He throws a pretty nice fade route and he showed the ability to throw into the flats. Its gonna be up to the receivers to make plays after the catch.
  • Ball security is a concern, but Logan will probably still try to get Davis to run with the ball. We will still run plenty of read options and maybe even some option pitches on the edge.
  • Davis did not look good throwing the ball into traffic on Saturday. Right now he lacks the arm strength or the accuracy to thread the needle into those tight spots. Look for plenty of throws to the sidelines away from the middle on the field.
  • This game might be a good chance for some running back screen passes. Fans have been hoping to see the running backs utilized more in the passing game and this is a prefect way to help a rookie quarterback get settled in.
