Importance of the Wake/Maryland games

The Boston College Football program has a chance in the upcoming weeks to gain national respect that they didn't have since the Flutie days. Last year, the eagles finally got over the Atlantic division hump and made it to the ACC championship. You would think that would translate into respect from programs and journalists around the country but it didn't. We all heard that Matt Ryan was the only reason we made it that far, not because we have a great program or a great coach or even a great supporting cast. Everyone just kind of used Matt Ryan as the scapegoat as to why BC football actually had a very successful year last year.

If we win the Atlantic this year, I feel like it will be different. There is no one superstar on this team that people can say 'that's why they are going to the ACC championship'. No, instead this year if we make it people might actually realize that we do have a great program and a great coaching staff to go along with it. We will no longer be flukes but rather one of the better ACC teams who always have a shot at the title. Respect level should in turn rise among colleges and press around the nation as well as high-school athletes who are recruited by us. The next two games mean much more than a chance to go to Tampa this year. A loss in either game would most likely mean Emerald Bowl and no respect to that Bowl but if we go there, we're pretty much right back to where we were in 2003 when we went there with Derrick Knight. Our teams have steadily gotten better and better and its time for the nation to see it.

Take a look at this preseason prediction:

"Jeff Jagodzinksi walked into quite a situation at Boston College after the departure of Tom O'Brien, with a football program that had won 52 games in the past 6 years and what ended up being the third overall pick in the recent NFL draft in Matt Ryan."

No respect for our program or coach Jags. Let's beat Wake and Maryland and prove the doubters wrong once and for all.
