Virginia Tech is 3-2 in the 5 games since losing in Chestnut Hill, with losses at FSU and at Miami. Their wins are not that impressive, 23-13 over Maryland, 14-3 against Duke, and 17-14 versus Virginia, all played at home.
Red-Shirt freshman running back Darren Evans has rushed for 556 yards in the 5 games since playing BC. He exploded for 253 yards against Maryland on his way to being named 2nd team All ACC.
Backup Sean Glennon, whom we saw last year in the Championship game has received more snaps recently after not playing a single down against us earlier in the year. He has made 73 pass attempts in the last 5 games, completing about 61% and throwing for 2 tds and 2 picks. VT's passing game is still weak at best. Adding to the quarterback struggles are the young wide receivers, who had a bad case of the drops against BC. The top two receivers are just freshman and are not huge threats.
Tyrod Taylor injured his left ankle against FSU and did not play at all against Maryland. He did, however, look to be at full strength against Virginia throwing for 137 yards (12-18) and 1 score while also rushing for 137 yards (including a long rush of 73 yards). Taylor struggled passing against BC (and pretty much every other team he faced), but he did rush for over 100 yards. He is the big threat for this team. He keeps plays alive with his legs and is very tough to sack (BC had 0 sacks against him this year).
The reason Virginia Tech was able to sneak back into the Championship Game this year is their defense. Bud Foster has these guys peaking at the right time. They have allowed just 11 points a game over the last four games. They haven't been forcing a ton of turnovers, but they have been effective in stopping offenses on third downs and pressuring the quarterback.
