Let me first say that I believe this is a great hire for the program. Frank Spaziani has dedicated himself to Boston College for the last 12 years, including 10 as the defensive coordinator. Spaz is genuinely passionate and excited to be the head coach. Spaz has the full support of those within the program and current players. This should allow for a seamless transition and no rebuilding time that would be required if an external coach brought in a new system.
Spaz is very well liked by his players, and I think this will translate well into recruiting success. As he acknowledged in his press conference, recruiting is the "lifeblood" of the program and it is necessary to be enthusiastic and devoted to bringing in top talent. Spaz seems to be a straight-shooter, but also a fun loving guy. He also has strong ties to New Jersey, which has always been a key pipeline for BC.
Gene Defilippo has emphasized loyalty and dedication to the program, and nobody fits the bill better than Spaz. However, I don't think this was the sole reason he was hired. Spaziani is the right guy at the right time for BC. We don't need a flashy coach, just a guy who will give his all to the program and make the most of the team's talent.
For those worried about Spaziani's age (at 61 he is the oldest hire in the history of the ACC), he stated in his press conference that he wants to be the head coach for the next 12 years. Don't forget, Spaz is a guy who got his start playing for, and then coaching under the great Joe Paterno at Penn State.
I am thrilled with Spaziani as our new head coach. He is a guy who wants the best for the team and the university, and won't put his own interests before the school's. I hope to see a towels on the shoulders of all fans in the stands during home games while Spaz is the head coach of the Boston College Eagles.
