Thoughts from the Music City Bowl

AP Photo

Its pretty obvious why BC lost this game; too many mistakes. The game winning kick was set up by two 15 yard penalties. Ramella's facemask and Herzlich's controversial late hit penalty (still not sure if that was the right call) were crucial errors. Vanderbilt's only score came on the botched punt return. Add in Davis' two interceptions and the fact Vanderbilt played mistake free football and its pretty clear why we lost.

I think the team struggled with the disappointment of facing a weaker opponent in the Music City Bowl instead of playing in the Orange Bowl. Vandy played like a team that wanted to win more and kudos to them.

The running game did not flourish like I expected it to. The Eagles managed only 3.7 yards per rushing attempt ( 38 rushes for 141 yards) and the longest run was only 13 yards. BC's backs had no space to run and the offensive run blocking was a disappointment.

The defense played well throughout the game, minus those two killer penalties. Vandy had no answer for BJ Raji and he single handily disrupted their running game. They came up with big stops on 3rd and short and allowed only 3 field goals all game.

Davis' play has raised questions about whether or not he is the quarterback of the future for this team. I am not ready to write him off just yet, but I will say that he must improve dramatically. As it is right now, he simply does not make enough plays to win these big games for us. I do like his athleticism and his ability to throw the ball down field, but he struggles with throws under pressure and into traffic. Going into the off-season I have to assume he is the #1 QB, but I expect Tuggle to compete and possibly even win the spot.

I'll have more to come come on the 2008 season in the next few days. Happy New Years to all!

Of course the late hit was the right call. The rules already protect the QBs more than any other play and it's just stupid to even put yourself and your team in that situation by laying your helmet into the QBs chest after he's thrown the ball. Like they said in Billy Madison, it was just "stupid, stupid, stupid." If he hits Adams with his shoulder, there's no call.
