BC Baseball | Alumni Update

Many former BC baseball players over the years have gone on to have careers in the minor leagues and in a few cases, have gotten the chance to play in the majors. I have researched a few recent BC players who have gone on to professional baseball to see how they are doing. Unfortunately, some are already out of baseball but others have thrived in the minors. Here is a short list of BC alumni and a brief update on their progress thus far. If you have any other player you'd like me to research or add, please don't be afraid to tell me in the comment section.

Chris Lambert (Detroit) AAA
The former first round pick saw some action in the majors last season (20.2 IP), but has spent the whole 2009 season in AAA. He has pitched solid, sporting a 4.55 ERA in 87 IP. Look for Lambert to possibly get called up if he can lower that ERA by a half a run or so.

Joe Martinez (San Francisco) AAA
Martinez started the 2009 season in the majors but in only his second appearance of the year, he was struck in the head by a comeback line drive. He is now rehabbing in the minors and is doing well. After successful stints in A and AA, Martinez was promoted to AAA where he has yet to make an appearance.

Drew Locke (LA Dodgers) AA
Drew Locke is tearing up AA right now and should be promoted to AAA any day now. In almost 300 ABs, Locke has a batting average of .327 and has slugged 11 home runs.

Ryne Reynoso (Atlanta) AA
Reynoso has been a very consistent performer throughout his professional career. After having very successful 2007 and 2008 seasons, Reynoso is at it again in 2009. In 91 IP, Ryne is 5-4 with a 3.36 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .217 against him. Look for a promotion to AA in the near future.

Marco Albano (LA Angels) AA
Marco Albano has been solid in AA, maintaining a 4.45 ERA in 30.1 IP. If he continues to improve his numbers he could turn into a pretty solid reliever in the future.

Michael Wlodarczyk (Tampa Bay) AA
After a promising 2008 campaign, Wlodarczyk has cooled off in 2009, wielding a 6.81 ERA in 37 IP. He'll need to return back to 2008 form (when he had a 2.70 ERA in 47 IP) if he wants to continue climbing through the ranks.

Jason Delaney (Pittsburgh) AA
Delaney has struggled this year in AA, hitting just .246 in 236 ABs. He had a strong year last year in AA, but if he does not improve his numbers this season, then I'm afraid that his baseball future looks bleak (as he is already 26).

Kevin Boggan (Tampa Bay) A+
After a very good 2008 campaign, Boggan has been good in 2009, recording a 3.86 ERA in just over 30 IP.Hopefully Boggan can maintain his success and keep ascending up through the minors.

Tony Sanchez (Pittsburgh) A
It appears that the Pirates are putting Sanchez on a fast track, as they promoted him up the A after only 4 games in short-season. He has only played in minimal games in A.

Eric Campbell (New York Mets) A
Eric Campbell is having an average year in A for the Mets. He is hitting at a .277 clip through 166 ABs. He'll need to be more patient at the plate and show more power in order to keep ascending through the Mets organization.

Dan Houston (Colorado) A
Houston is having a solid year in A ball this year, with a 4.15 ERA in 73.2 IP. He needs to work on giving up less homeruns, and would do well in lowering his opponents batting average (which is currently at .256).

JB MacDonald (Houston) short-season
JB MacDonald will apparently be used as a reliever in the Astros system, making 5 appearances out of the pen thus far. He has so far thrown 5.2 innings, yielding 4 earned runs.

Barry Butera (Houston) short-season
Butera is currently playing on the same team as JB MacDonald. In 20 at bats so far this year, he has collected 3 hits (.150 average), and has struck out 8 times.

Terry Doyle (Chicago White Sox) rookie
After a very good 2008 season (when he had an ERA of 1.88), Doyle has only made 3 appearances in 2009. In those three appearances Doyle has an ERA of 6.14 in just under 15 IP. However, Doyle has been a strikeout machine this year, already K'ing 25 batters.
